Today, one’s identity is as much a product of their school, college, workplace, family, country, as it is about their presence on social media. And the first among equals when it comes to social media, is undoubtedly Facebook.

Having literally changed the DNA of communication and social interaction in the past decade and a half, Facebook has constantly been coming up with updates and new features, to make social media an integral part of society. When it comes to social media, one of the key aspects of interaction on social media, which has come under the scanner more often than not, is the aspect of safety and security of a person in the online space. As more of the world becomes a part of social media platforms, issues of cyber crime, trolling, online harassment, are coming to the forefront more and more.

Safety@Facebook

Keeping this in mind, recently Facebook revamped their Safety Center, and relaunched it. It is now available in 50 languages and is essentially aimed at helping people set their privacy controls on Facebook. Additionally, it has updated its Bullying Prevention Hub, which now states that Facebook has 60 partners who work with them to make their safety tools better, and bully-free.

While the Safety Center has been in place since 2010, and the Bullying Hub since 2013, what has changed now is that with an increase in languages, the tools are now available to a wider audience. Additionally, it is now mobile friendly, keeping in mind that in many countries, users access Facebook only via mobile platforms.

CSR has been collaborating with Facebook for our #SocialSurfing workshops since 2015, where we conduct workshops across colleges in India, on online safety, counterspeech and effective communication on social media. The purpose of this project is to inculcate a sense of control over one's social media profiles, by way of generating awareness regarding Facebook's safety features. Thus, we are extremely happy with the launch of this new and improved Safety Center, and love that with the inclusion of resources in varied Indian languages like Malayalam, Kannada and Gujarati, among others, more of the non-English speaking Facebook users can be acquainted with safety features. This awareness and knowledge is key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable online experience for all.
